The Annual Memorial Day Service held in Birmingham, Michigan- May 27, 2013- had a very special guest-President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln, as presented by Fred Priebe, offered some background commentary on his Gettysburg speech before giving a stirring rendition of the Address. Members of Camp 2 (General Israel B. Richardson Camp), Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of Michigan were also present for the program and participated throughout.  Camp 2’s Commander Bill Nash introduced President Lincoln- who proceeded to the speaker’s stand with a Civil War Honor  Guard while the Straw Hat Band struck up “Hail to the Chief.” Commander Nash had earlier in the program given a speech on the “Origin of Memorial Day.” Besides President Lincoln, there were many other dignitaries present for the occasion, including Mayor George Dilgard who gave a Memorial Day Address. Most important of all, there were many veterans from all branches of military service in attendance. May we all take time to reflect on all of those in uniform who paid the highest sacrifice for the sake of our country’s freedom. God bless the U.S.A.!
