‘A dozen or more leading businessmen from Wilmington, Delaware, called on Lincoln one day.
“Mr. President,” said the chairman of the delegation, “we are all the top leaders-you might say that we represent the weight of Delaware.”
When their spokesman completed his little speech, Lincoln asked, “so you are the weighty men of Delaware? All from New Castle County.”
“Yes,” piped up a couple, “we’re all from the same city.”
“Well,” said Lincoln impishly, “did it ever occur to you gentlemen that with all the weight of you three here today, there was danger of your state tipping up in your absence?” ‘
