Camp 2 Sons of Union Veterans, Department of Michigan Observes Memorial Day

Camp 2, Sons of Union Veterans, Dept. of Michigan

Oakland County’s Camp # 2, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of Michigan participated in two observances of Memorial Day 2011. The first ceremony was held in Birmingham, Michigan followed by one in Pontiac at the grave of General Israel B. Richardson-the namesake of our Camp. It was a beautiful day-no rain-but it got hot in those uniforms!

Highlights of the ceremonies included a reading of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and a speech regarding the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Veterans from various American wars were represented including World War Two and Vietnam. Camp 2 held it’s traditional observance at General Richardson’s grave with a special tribute to one of it’s own recently deceased members -Dr. Carl Becker. All in all it was a great day. God bless all of our current military members. Thank God for all those who have served and for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. And God bless the United States of America!
