Did Abraham Lincoln have the right ideas about government all along?

Mr. Peanut asked:

These were his words:

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

…..Abraham Lincoln

What say you?

    Amen, Honest Abe.

  2. Abey c says:

sounds nice, but my people were slaves when he ****** that out…if you’re about building brotherhood, then there is no class structure to incite hatred within.
most of his rantings sound nice, and are specifically slanted toward a condition he knew of in his time..the plantation owners of the south were rich, and were utterly destroyed by the civil war..don’t know how much it helped the poor enslaved blacks, but it freed them from that particular form of oppression.
A penny saved is a penny earned; but it seems our financial institutions have lost or squandered all the pennies saved by us, and entrusted to them…when these banks and madoff closed shop, they didn’t state that they lost THEIR money, they lost YOUR money..THEY are recieving enough back from the govt, to give bonuses…but how many people have recoouped their entire savings portfolio from folded banks and crooks like Madoff?
Abe did a lot of talking, and like his protoge Obama, both are sure to disappoint a lot of people, simply for turning out to be nothing more than politicians..

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. But it doesn’t offer anything to what we could do.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. Same argument.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. This is good advice and the banker boys and the wall street boys should be clued in.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
    Well of course.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
Good advice for Savage and those similar.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence. I strongly agree with this one.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves. Key word here is permanently and if that is understood then I agree.

Alleged quotes from Abraham Lincoln about the poor, the weak, prosperity, workers, class hatred, and character.

    The Truth:
These words are often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, but according to the book They Never Said it: A Book of Fake Quotes, Misquotes, & Misleading Attributions, they are not from Lincoln.

The quotes were published in 1942 by William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister. He released a pamphlet titled Lincoln On Limitations, which did include a Lincoln quote, but also added 10 statements written by Boetcker himself.

  8. Nate says:

Mr. Nash is quite correct. Please do your homework!

  9. B. Nash says:

Mr. Peanut: Sorry to tell you this but Abraham Lincoln NEVER stated or wrote those words. Even President Reagan made this mistake (in a speech). The quote actually was made by a minister in the early 20th Century. Some mistakes about Lincoln refuse to die-like this one!
