Does anyone know of any Abraham Lincoln statues or streets in Canada?

Instruisto asked:

I know there are a lot of Lincoln place names in Canada, but which are named for Abraham Lincoln? This is for a school project. Thanks!

Dave: Mable Kunkel was a school teacher in Kentucky. She spent her entire adult life researching and writing Unforgettable American. At the time of publication it was hearlded as the most complete book of Lincoln ever written. I have about 40 remaining new volumes of this book. She was my great aunt.
Please contact me if you know of any institutions or Lincoln buffs who may want a copy.

Not unless the statue is in a wax museum somewhere. Canada has their own heroes that they make statues of. That would be like trying to find a statue of Alexander McDonald in the States somewhere.

Bill, I have a copy of Kunkel’s book. Without checking I believe she was a school teacher from North Carolina that compiled this information. It is quite a book covering all things Lincoln. Not really up on street names and which Lincoln they are attributable to.
The books I use for state information sources are Durman, Bullard and Mead – all quite old.
I am familiar with chris and his unique Lincoln artwork.
I don’t try to track Lincoln art in private collections. My database almost exclusively public statues and monuments. I do have a few peices from private sources but those are unique works and not copies of other statues or busts. One that I have is from the collection of the Union League Club in Philadelphia. It is done by J. Otto Schweizer. Schweizer is the same sculptor that executed the Lincoln statue that is found on one corner of the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg.

Dave: Read the reply given by my friend Chris. Do you know anything about this?

  5. Chris says:

Mabel Kunkel’s “Abraham Lincoln: Unforgettable American” lists three sculptures of Lincoln in Dundas, Ontario, privately owned by William McCulloch, a member of the Lincoln Fellowship of Hamilton, Ontario. This is the only reference I can find to Lincoln statues in Canada.

It’s hard to say whether this information is accurate now because the book was printed in 1976.

As far as streets – some may be named after Lincoln, England (rather than Abraham Lincoln). You’d have to do research on each one. Some in the US (particularly in the South) are named for revolutionary war hero Benjamin Lincoln, but I’m not sure how this would be a factor in Canada.

I actually know of at least one street named after Lincoln in a foreign country – in Juarez, Mexico:

I’m sure there’s a lot more than this. There are statues of Lincoln in over 70 countries. If there’s lots of Lincoln place names in Canada, I’m sure some of them are named after Lincoln.

I have researched Lincoln statues around the world and I have found no public statues erected to honor Abraham Lincoln in Canada. During the Civil War, Canada was home to many Confederate sypathizers. I wouldn’t doubt there are busts or small versions of some of the more famous Lincoln scuptural pieces in museum collections in Canada but my research doesn’t go thst deep on the subject.
If anyone does know of one please email me with information.

To my friend Dave Wiegers: Interesting question. Are you aware of any Lincoln statues in Canada? Are there any across from me living in the Detroit area?
