Lincoln didn’t eat much…

I’ve read accounts where Lincoln pretty much “ate like a bird”- as some folks used to say about a person who didn’t eat much. At least, that’s what I’ve read about Mr. Lincoln as president. He probably had a huge appetite as a young man, I would imagine. After all, Lincoln was an athlete-an active wrestler. He also split a rail or two. He would need a lot of food to keep the demands of his body going.  As the leader of the United States during the war, it seems he didn’t eat so much anymore. He lost a lot of weight. Different accounts suggest up to 30 or 40 pounds of weight loss. He wasn’t dieting, either. He was busy. He was stressed. His appetite went down. He was too worried to eat. He didn’t have time to eat. Whatever! He lost weight. I have read where for lunch he might have an apple and a beverage-that’s it. Towards the end of his life, he looked sickly. The weight loss took it’s toll. On the last day of his life, April 14th, he had a meal with Mary and son Robert. I don’t remember if Tad was there too. He probably was. Lincoln sitting with his family eating a meal together-now that was something that needed to be done more often! And it probably would have been-but-well, you know why. Lincoln is alleged to have said once something like: “If this is coffee, bring me tea. If this is tea, bring me coffee.” He probably should have added to the comment: “And bring me some coffee cake, too.” After all, Lincoln didn’t eat much…
