Lincoln in Sculpture by Carl Volkmann
This week I was priviledged to receive the book “Lincoln In Sculpture” by it’s author Carl Volkmann. It’s published by the Illinois State Historical Society. The book totals fifty pages and is filled with tons of information concerning Lincoln statues in Illinois. There is also coverage regarding twelve Lincoln busts. Mr. Volkmann also saw fit to include the GPS coordinates for each statue profiled. I can only imagine the countless hours he spent compiling all the facts for each statue. If you are a student of Lincoln statuary-you must get this book. Personally, I had the same idea to do this for the Lincoln statuary in Michigan. I’ve been working on it for about two years. I have no intention of publishing a book out of my endeavors (but you never know!).
Mr. Volkmann had this to say in the letter sent to me:
“I have been a devoted “Lincoln Buff” for as long as I can remember. When we moved to Springfield in 1960, I soon realized I had entered a Lincoln paradise, a place where I could visit Lincoln’s Home, Lincoln’s Tomb, the Old State Capitol, and the Lincoln Law Office…I had photographed forty-four examples of Lincoln statues and busts in illinois. I started to write stories about each sculpture and included information about the sculpture, the artist’s vision when planning the project, and the events on the day the sculpture was dedicated. ”
Eventually, the Lincoln statue stories became a book. The result was Lincoln In Sculpture.
It was great to hear from Mr. Volkmann. I’m pleased that he made a visit to Abesblogcabin. Carl, please visit again. Lincoln sculpture buffs-buy the book-you won’t regret it!
