My Roosevelt, Washington, and Lincoln “Steersmen” Clock

Roosevelt, Washington, and Lincoln Steersmen Clock

Another antique store find!  The owner didn’t even know she had it in the store.  She said it had been in the store a “long time” and that she had forgotten about it.  As I looked at it I thought of my father-in-law. I asked him once who his favorite President was. He quickly said:  “FDR!”  I had actually expected his answer to be Lincoln or Washington-so he surprised me with Mr. Roosevelt. He explained that he was a child during the Great Depression.  He remembered well having to steal fruit from the local market because there was no food at home.  He then said rather proudly: “Roosevelt got us out of all that.  He saved America.”  I certainly couldn’t argue with him on that-he was there.  I wasn’t even born yet!

So I purchased the clock.  I think it is a great piece. I believe it is from the 1930’s.  Obviously, the clock is meant to demonstrate just what my father-in-law said actually happened-that President Roosevelt was at the helm of the ship of State to steer the country at that time through the Depression.  He had the guidance of no less than Abraham Lincoln and George Washington-our country’s greatest leaders.  Together they are the “steersmen.”  FDR had actually referenced Abraham Lincoln many times during his political career. I’m not not sure about his Washington citations.  At any rate, my father-in-law is not alone in his opinion of FDR’s greatness.  Many certainly consider him to have been one of the best Presidents-if not the best!
