Theodore Roosevelt & Lincoln

Young Theodore Roosevelt

Young Theodore Roosevelt

“Thank God for the iron in the blood of our fathers, the men who upheld the wisdom of Lincoln, and bore the sword of the army of Grant.”

Theodore Roosevelt

When Theodore Roosevelt was a boy he is said to have watched through a window the Lincoln funeral procession as it passed down the street in New York. It must have made a lasting impression on young Roosevelt as he was a life-long Lincoln admirer. At Theodore Roosevelt’s inauguration as President, he wore a ring given to him by Robert Todd Lincoln with strands of Abraham Lincoln’s hair encased in it. ‘Teddy’ also dedicated the cornerstone of the Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site in 1909. He was an avid reader and well acquainted with the Lincoln works of his day. No wonder he said: ” I am a part of everything that I have read.”
