You wear what size shoe Mr. Lincoln?

Lincoln pics 002

When I was 12 years old, I was 6’4″ and wore a size 13 shoe. That was the 1960’s. I was skinny and awkward. My feet were big! People would joke: “Why don’t you just wear the shoe box!”  Well, I was rather good at basketball. But, otherwise I was clumsy. Now understand, my height was considered “tall” back then. Nowadays, it isn’t tall anymore.  I have seen 12 year-olds today with 15 size shoes. And they are taller than 6’4″. Back in my time, it was hard to find any store that even carried a 13 size shoe-now larger sizes are easily obtainable. This all brings to mind Abraham Lincoln. For his day, the guy was a giant. The average man was what-5’4″? The average shoe size-maybe a 7? Mr. Lincoln must have had a rough time. Like it used to be said about someone tall- he was a “tall drink of water!” And his shoe size?  It is accepted that he wore a size 13. Do you have any idea of how hard it must have been in the 1800’s to find a size 13 shoe or boot? It wasn’t like he could just run over to the local Red-Wing Shoe store.  No wonder Lincoln didn’t wear shoes as a young man much. He was often seen barefootin’ it. Now we know why! “His feets was too big!”(as one person expressed it).  And the reason why he wanted to become president? Because he knew as president, that he would always have shoes. After all, the President of the United States can’t go around bare-footed. But, something tells me that he sure would have liked too. He was just that kind of fellow.
