How to Study Chemistry: The 5 Elements of Success

Sam Cowles, December 26, 2023

Continuing with our popular series “How to Study…” today we present How to Study Chemistry. Discover with us the best tips and techniques to improve your results in the subject of Chemistry. Also check out our previous editions on how to study mathematics , history , English , geography , physics , biology and philosophy chempire.net.

Chemistry is a subject that is often studied together with Physics . However, it is important to highlight that they are very different subjects, so it is necessary to distinguish them appropriately and identify the best study methods and techniques for each of them.

How to Study Chemistry

Study Method #1: Read the material before going to class
The method known as Flipped Classroom or Inverted Class is a rising trend in all subjects, including science. However, in Chemistry its positive effects are multiplied. This technique basically consists of studying the lesson in advance , before going to class, to familiarize yourself with the concepts. In this way, the class will be much easier to follow and we will be able to take advantage of it to consolidate knowledge and ask questions.

Study Method #2: Understanding instead of memorizing
William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” We can not agree more! We have to be selective with what we memorize . When we study, efforts should be focused on understanding the concepts instead of meaninglessly memorizing everything.

Once we have assimilated everything, we will know what is really important, so we can put that selective memorization into practice. In no case should memorization replace understanding.

Study Method #3: Use Memory Cards
The subject of chemistry is full of symbols, chemical formulas and scientific language. Correctly interpreting all these concepts is key to success in the exams in this subject. Although this point seems basic, it is what leads a large number of students to failure, since they underestimate the importance of having a solid foundation .

In this sense, study cards or flashcards are the ideal tool to organize and store all the chemical symbols and formulas that we encounter when we study chemistry. Once we have our set of cards created with the periodic table of elements , formulas, or any other concept, memorizing and reviewing them will be much easier and faster.

Study Method #4: Write Everything Down
It is not enough to pay attention in class. In chemistry, you need to write everything down and get to the bottom of it. Formulas and equations will be much easier once written properly . This way, you can more easily determine what you understand and what you don’t, as well as understand why reactions occur or where you made a mistake. If you’re looking for a simple way to create notes wherever you are, try our Online Notes .

Study Method #5: Practice daily
Continuing with the previous point, one of the keys in the study of chemistry is practice . Solving equations and practical problems should be part of your study routine. Testing our knowledge with Test-type exams on a regular basis is also a good practice to prepare for exams and evaluate our level of mastery of the subject.

Finally, we would like to highlight that, although we have separated the study methods into 5 sections, these are not independent but, on the contrary, increase their effectiveness when used together . Furthermore, Chemistry includes many branches and fields of study, each with its own particularities, so it is necessary that you evaluate your needs and choose the study methods that best suit you.

Thus, some of these fields have a strong load of mathematics or physics , so mastery of these subjects is also key. In this sense, we remind you that with ExamTime you can introduce mathematical symbols using LaTex language in your study resources, which will make it easier for you to introduce formulas, equations and other mathematical concepts.
